About Date Range Filters

Use a date range filter to define a time frame you’d like to analyze. You can create your own custom date filters, or select from a list of predefined filters.

Understanding Date Filters

When using date filters, keep in mind the following:

  • Definitions of weeks, months, quarters, and years can differ depending on a project’s reporting calendar. The date ranges listed on this page are based on the standard (default) reporting calendar. See Reporting Calendar for details.
  • Date ranges are displayed according to the time zone defined for the project. See Time Zones in Reports for details.
  • Date range filters are based on the Document Date attribute defined during data upload. If you need to create a date range filter based on a different date attribute, use category-derived attributes in Designer.

Predefined Date Filters

Here’s a list of date range filters we provide for you.

Qtip: You can disable predefined date filters for all users of your master account.

Filters that include days start at 12:00AM on the same day and end at 11:59PM the current day.

Rolling Filters

In rolling filters, the start and end time and date are dynamically updated as time passes.

  • Last 4 hours
  • Last 24 hours
Qtip: These date ranges are always rounded up to include full hours of data. For example, “Last 4 hours” for 9:45AM will include data from 5:00AM – 9:59AM.

Last X Days

These filters start at 12:00 AM X days ago and end at 11:59 PM today.

Qtip: Because this range includes all of the current day, its total duration is 1 day more than indicated. This means that if you compare Last 7 days to the Previous period in period over period reporting, you will be comparing two 8-day periods.

These are daily moving filters, meaning that once a day at 12:00 AM its start and end date will simultaneously shift one day forward.

  • Last 7 days
  • Last 30 days (default for widgets)
  • Last 90 days
  • Last 180 days
  • Last 365 days

Last X Months

These monthly filters show data for X previous complete months AND include the entirety of the current incomplete month.

These are monthly moving filters, meaning that on the first day of the month at 12:00 AM its start and end date will simultaneously shift 1 month forward.

  • Last 13 months
  • Last 14 months
  • Last 15 months
Example: If today is February 6, 2017, then Last 14 months will show data from January 1, 2016, 12:00 AM to February 6, 2017, 11:59 PM.

Previous X Months

These are monthly moving filters, meaning that on the first day of the month at 12:00 AM its start and end date will simultaneously shift 1 month forward.

  • Previous 12 months
  • Previous 13 months
  • Previous 14 months
  • Previous 15 months

Starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the month 14 months ago and ends at 11:59 PM on the last day of the month before the current month.

Example: If today is February 6, 2017, then Previous 14 months will show data from December 1, 2015, 12:00 AM to January 31, 2017, 11:59 PM.

Other Previous Time Frames

  • Previous day: This range shows data for the last complete day. It starts at 12:00 AM on the day before the current day and ends at 11:59 PM on the same day. This is a daily moving filter, meaning that once a day at 12:00 AM its start and end date will simultaneously shift one day forward.
  • Previous week: This range shows data for the last complete week. It starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the week (Sunday) before the current week and ends at 11:59 PM on the last day of the same week (Saturday). This is a weekly moving filter, meaning that on the first day of the week (Sunday) at 12:00 AM its start and end date will simultaneously shift one week forward.
  • Previous month: This range shows data for the last complete month. It starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the month before the current month and ends at 11:59 PM on the last day of the same month. This is a monthly moving filter, meaning that on the first day of the month at 12:00 AM its start and end date will simultaneously shift one month forward.
  • Previous quarter: This range shows data for the last complete quarter. It starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the quarter before the current quarter and ends at 11:59 PM on the last day of the same quarter. This is a quarterly moving filter, meaning that on the first day of the quarter at 12:00 AM its start and end date will simultaneously shift three months forward.
  • Previous year: This range shows data for the last complete year. It starts at 12:00 AM on January 1st of the year before the current year and ends at 11:59 PM on December 31 of the same year. This is a yearly moving filter, meaning that on January 1st at 12:00 AM its start and end date will simultaneously shift one year forward.

Current Date

  • Current week: Starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the current week (Sunday) and ends at 11:59 PM on the last day of the current week (Saturday).
  • Current month: Starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the current month and ends at 11:59 PM on the last day of the current month.
  • Current quarter: Starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the current quarter and ends at 11:59 PM of the last day of the current quarter.
  • Current year: Starts at 12:00 AM on January 1st of the current year and ends at 11:59 PM on December 31 of the current year.

To Date

  • Week to Date: Starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the current week (Sunday). The end date is dynamically updated to match the current moment (rolling).
  • Month to Date: Starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the current month. The end date is dynamically updated to match the current moment (rolling).
  • Quarter to Date: Starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the current quarter. The end date is dynamically updated to match the current moment (rolling).
  • Year to Date: Starts at 12:00 AM on January 1st of the current year. The end date is dynamically updated to match the current moment (rolling).

Other

  • Missing Dates: This filter displays data that has no dates loaded. This filter cannot be used in period over period reporting.
  • Custom (ad hoc): Define a fixed FROM/TO date range. Use this option to expand the date range beyond the default of 180 days, or beyond 365 days.
Qtip: Date ranges spanning more than 365 days may negatively impact report performance.
  • Custom (saved): You can use custom date range filters you saved previously (see Defining Custom Date Ranges).

Period Over Period Reporting

Period over period reporting lets you compare data over 2 time periods: current and historic. The historic period options are different for trend reports (when data is grouped by any time attribute) and non-trend reports.

HISTORIC PERIOD OPTIONS FOR TREND REPORTS

Historic Period Definition
Same period last year Sets the historic period to be the same time frame as the current period, shifted 1 year back in time.

Depending on the time unit used to group data in your trend report, the previous period’s start and end dates are calculated as follows:

  • When grouping by hours, days, or weeks, we subtract 365 days from the current period’s start and end dates.
  • When grouping by months or quarters, we use the calendar definition of the same period last year. The length of periods being compared may vary depending on calendar fluctuations, but we’re always comparing the same calendar months and quarters.
Same period last quarter Sets the historic period to be the same time frame as the current period, shifted 1 quarter back in time.

Depending on the time unit  used to group data in your trend report, the previous period’s start and end dates are calculated as follows:

  • When grouping by hours, days, or weeks, we subtract 91 days from the current period’s start and end dates.
  • When grouping by months, we use the calendar definition of the same period last quarter. The length of periods being compared may vary depending on calendar fluctuations, but we’re always comparing the same calendar months.
Running 3 Months Sets the historic period to include the current month and 2 months before it.

Starts at 12:00 AM on the first day of the month 2 months before the current month. Ends at 11:59 PM on the last day of the current month.

Only available when grouping data by months.

Qtip: We also recommend reading Period to Date vs. Current Period.
Qtip: All of the other historic periods are calculated the same as for non-trend reports. Read on to see more.

HISTORIC PERIOD OPTIONS FOR NON-TREND REPORTS

Historic Period Definition
Previous period Sets the historic period to be the same duration as the period immediately before the current period.

Depending on the definition of the current period, the previous period’s start and end dates are calculated as follows:

  • For rolling or custom date ranges, we subtract the length of the current period from its start and end dates.
  • For other date ranges, we shift the start date of the current period to the beginning of the preceding time period, and we shift the end date of the current period to the ending of the preceding time period.
Same period last year Sets the historic period to be the same time frame as the current period shifted one year back in time.

Depending on the definition of the current period, the previous period’s start and end dates are calculated as follows:

  • For rolling, daily moving, or custom date ranges, we subtract 365 days from the current period’s start and end dates.
  •  For other date ranges, we find the time period last year that is in the same relative position to the current period in the current year.
Same period last quarter Sets the historic period to be the same time frame as the current period shifted one quarter back in time.

Depending on the definition of the current period, the previous period’s start and end dates are calculated as follows:

  • For rolling, daily moving, or custom date ranges, we subtract 91 days from the current period’s start and end dates.
  • For other date ranges, we find the time period last quarter that is in the same relative position to the current period in the current quarter.
Same period last month Sets the historic period to be the same time frame as the current period shifted one month back in time.

Depending on the definition of the current period,, the previous period’s start and end dates are calculated as follows:

  • For rolling, daily moving, or custom date ranges, we subtract 30 days from the current period’s start and end dates.
  • For other date ranges, we find the time period last month that is in the same relative position to the current period in the current month.
Same period last week Sets the historic period to be the same time frame as the current period shifted one week back in time.

Depending on the definition of the current period, the previous period’s start and end dates are calculated as follows:

  • For rolling, daily moving, or custom date ranges, we subtract 7 days from the current period’s start and end dates.
  • For other date ranges, we find the time period last week that is in the same relative position to the current period in the current week.

Period to Date vs. Current Period

When used as the only date range for a report, “period to date” is about the same as the “current period” date range.

Example: Let’s say today is Thursday. You filter for the “week to date,” which only looks for data from Sunday to Thursday. You then filter for “current week” – and get the same result. That’s because although the filter is looking for data from Sunday 12:00 AM to Saturday 11:59 PM, Friday and Saturday haven’t happened yet, so there’s no data to find.

However, when used in period over period reporting, these date ranges will return different results.

Example: If you set the historic period to be “Same period last week,” it will be defined as follows:

  • If the current period is set to Week to Date, the historic period will cover data from 12:00 AM September 25 to September 29 at the time you ran the report
  • If the current period is set to Current Week, the historic period will cover data from 12:00 AM September 25 to 11:59 PM October 1.
