About Ad Hoc Hierarchies

An Ad Hoc hierarchy is a hierarchy that you build from scratch inside the Employee Engagement platform, without relying on pre-set metadata.

Warning: While this option may seem easier, we recommend that you read up on Parent-Child hierarchies and Level-Based hierarchies to determine if either of those options better fit your organization’s structure. Check out a basic comparison of your options on the Hierarchies Basic Overview page.

Generating an Ad Hoc Hierarchy

Warning: You may have up to 10 hierarchies in a project. Once you reach 7 hierarchies, you will receive a warning that you’re approaching the hierarchy limit. If you have 10 hierarchies, you will not be able to create another without deleting a hierarchy.

Navigate to the Participants tab.
Navigate to the Org Hierarchies section.
Click Create Org Hierarchy.
Type a Name for your hierarchy.
Under Type, select Ad Hoc.
Click Create.

Once your Ad Hoc hierarchy is created, you will use the methods described on the following support pages to build your units and assign your participants from scratch:

Navigating Hierarchies &...

Once you generate your hierarchy, it is important to understand how to read your hierarchy in the Org Hierarchies section. On the left-hand side will be the navigation sidebar that contains the breakdown of your hierarchy. You can click the arrows next to each unit to either collapse or expand the units. By default, the numbers to the right of each unit in the navigation sidebar specify the number of participants in and below that unit.

The Settings tab is where you can modify general project settings, intercept settings, and session replay settings. Before you get started, it helps to get familiar with how this tab is organized.

Generating a Parent-Child Hi...

Parent-Child hierarchies are the most commonly used kind of hierarchy. They are the best option if your HR data is formatted so you have a list of employees' IDs and the managers each employee reports up to.

Unit Tools (EX)

Unit Tools allow you to adjust your units on a unit level. These can be found in the upper right-hand corner of a selected unit when in the Org Hierarchies section of the Participants tab.

Generating a Level-Based Hie...

Level-Based hierarchies are a good option if your HR data includes each level the employee reports to, from the top of the hierarchy all the way down to where the employee sits. With Level-Based hierarchies, you don't necessarily have to know who the employee's manager is; you just need to know the chain of command for each employee you're including in the project. This data format is often more common with companies that organize employee data by distinct levels, location, or functional breakout.

This page will go over the steps for configuring dynamic org hierarchies so they can be used to filter data in CX Dashboards. Thus dashboard users will only be able to see data according to their level in an employee hierarchy.
