Why Qualtrics – Drew McClelland – Software Engineer – Provo, UT
I am a software engineer because it provides limitless learning opportunities; I’m never bored and there’s always more technical and professional lessons to learn. Qualtrics has given me the opportunity to take ownership of impactful problems, lead projects of significant scope, and provides the flexibility for me to dive into the technical subjects I am most passionate about.
What attracted you to Qualtrics in the first place?
I originally chose to work at Qualtrics because they were betting big on research. They understood the value and necessity of investing in cutting edge research in order to beat out the competitors. I love working at a company that is solving problems that no other company has encountered yet.
What is your favorite part of your role?
My favorite part of my job is making a significant impact and learning new skills. I love to learn new things, and my position allows me to do that every day. I have learned three new programming languages and a number of frameworks since I started in July of 2017. We are also given a percentage of our time to learn new skills that we are personally passionate about. We have numerous engineering-wide discussions on machine learning research, architecture design, and technologies other teams have leveraged.
In terms of impact, I’ve led a number of multi-quarter projects with significant architectural and customer impact which I feel have been a huge accelerator for my career.
What surprised you most about working at Qualtrics?
I was most surprised by the people I have been able to work with in engineering. My co-workers are incredibly talented and have an astonishing breadth and depth of knowledge. This is amplified by the willingness of senior engineers to personally work with me on projects and share their knowledge. I have learned so much from other developers here and I never imagined at this point in my career I would have the knowledge I have now.

Drew is an alumnus of the University of Utah and started his career at Lucid Software. He loves to play volleyball, scuba dive and can barefoot water ski with a moderate amount of success. |
