SALT LAKE CITY and DUBLIN, May 11, 2020 – 5 For The Fight, a global movement inviting everyone to give $5 for the fight against cancer, today announced the “Do 5 Challenge,” inviting 5,000 people across the world to join together during the month of May, which is designated as 5 For The Fight month. The “Do 5 Challenge” is a global, virtual event where people can participate by doing 5 of any activity, such as 500 jumping jacks, sit-ups, or burpees, 5 virtual exercise classes, riding their bikes for 50 miles, or running a 5K appropriate for social distancing.
The “Do 5 Challenge” also invites those who register to donate $5 or €5 to cancer research in honor of someone they know who has fought or is fighting cancer, and to nominate 5 people to join them. During the inaugural year of the 5K, more than 1,200 participants from more than 25 countries and 30 cities—including Australia, Canada, Cambodia, Croatia, France, Germany, Tokyo—joined the movement. By May 5th of this year, the same number of participants had already joined the event from 45 countries around the world.
“We are so grateful to have an opportunity to bring people together in a common cause to honor our loved ones who have fought or are fighting cancer. In a time where we need to maintain social distance, joining together in a cause feels more powerful than ever,” said Lori Morency Kun, head of social impact,Qualtrics. “5 For The Fight month is our chance to show our love and support for cancer patients and their families, get active with a common goal, and aggregate $5 donations to support cancer researchers in a global way.”
Anyone can register at 5ForTheFight.org/5k where they will receive an electronic bib and virtual medal upon completion. Participants can track their 5K runs or walks using the Your Virtual Race app. All are encouraged to post their “Do 5 Challenge” on social media using the hashtag #5ForTheFight on May 15 and 16, 2020.
“The support we received last year through this event was overwhelming,” said Orla Dolan, Breakthrough Cancer Research, the organization that administers the 5 For The Fight Fellowship program in Cork, Ireland. “Our partnership with 5 For The Fight allowed us to turbocharge one of the most promising areas of our research, the immune system in cancer. There is no doubt that patients and their families are waiting for the results of our research but there is also no doubt that with the support from the 5K For The Fight that we will be able to deliver results even more quickly.”
Organizations can get involved with 5 For The Fight in a number of ways, including employee giving and point-of-sale donations. To date, employees at 39 companies across more than 30 cities have joined the movement to donate at least $5 per pay period to the fight against cancer year-round. Employee giving has made it possible for 5 For The Fight to hire 13 research fellows in Ireland and the United States.
